- The Mecklenburg Centre is intended to interlink the broad interest in the history and culture of the state with university research and teaching and thus contribute to strengthening civil society.
An interest in the history, language and culture of the state is deeply rooted in Mecklenburg and Vorpommern. It forms the basis for a constructive and reflective understanding of home and identity, which is essential for the development of democratic thinking. The historical self-positioning of the people in the state thus contributes significantly to the strengthening of civil society and the rule of law.
This interest is fuelled by civic engagement. In future, the Centre for Regional History and Culture of Mecklenburg at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Rostock will serve to link these civic activities more closely with university research. The centre will anchor the university even more firmly in the public eye as a provider of knowledge. This will enable the University of Rostock to fulfil its third mission even better. The state and the people of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will benefit greatly from such an institution.
Accordingly, the establishment of the centre is already set out in the 2021-2025 target agreement between the Ministry of Science and the University of Rostock and in the University Development Plan 2021-2025. The following proposals for the implementation of this plan include preliminary work at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Rostock (since 2017) and as part of the Regional History Round Table (since 2021).
